Update sh02
It is hard to see with this video player but the car is where the little green spec is in front of the smoke.

Animatic
Here is a very rough animatic to just kinda get the ideas down for camera moves. Keep in mind that this will take place in the salt flats and will have mountains in the background. The story goes along the lines of a dust storm looking smoke simulation is chasing the car and right as it finally catches the car, the car takes off leaving the smoke in its dust. It will be hyper realistic, giving it a commercial feel.

New Ideas
My project has kinda turned a 180 on itself. The same concept still applies but in order to maintain a full story and not just a visual effects shot I have changed it up some. It still has the formula one car and smoke but it now takes place on the salt flats of Utah where the smoke is actually chasing the car.
Simulation Tests
I did some simulation tests for controlling velocities along curves to help push the smoke around.
I had some issues with getting the smoke to act properly at first once it reached the end of the curve, but I finally figured out how to add the velocity from the curve to the existing velocity field instead of just using the curves velocity to pump the smoke through.

Start
For part of my time interning at Side Effects Software we are given a mentor to help us learn and grow for ten weeks. This blog is for my progress of the shot that I will be getting help with from my mentor. The idea of the shot is to recreate a car in a wind tunnel effect with custom velocity fields to control the pyro simulations. The end product will be more stylized to look like a well polished commercial.
